SMC approval provides option for postmenopausal women at risk of fractures

The Scottish Medicines Consortium has recommended Eladynos (abaloparatide) for treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at very high risk of fracture through the NHS in Scotland, Theramex announced today.

Osteoporosis is a condition marked by reduced bone density and tissue degradation, making bones fragile and prone to fractures. It affects half of women over 50 and contributes significantly to early death and disability.

Fractures caused by osteoporosis are a major burden on the NHS. Hip fractures account for half of fracture-related deaths in women and cost the NHS £2bn annually. The total cost of osteoporotic fractures exceeds £4.6bn, projected to reach £6bn by 2030.

Despite these figures, many patients face delays in diagnosis and treatment. A quarter of women endure more than three fractures before diagnosis. Two thirds of high-risk individuals don’t receive appropriate treatment.

Abaloparatide is an anabolic therapy that promotes new bone formation and is administered as a daily injection. Treatment can last up to 18 months and may be followed by other therapies. UK guidelines recommend anabolic treatments as a first-line option for women at very high risk.

Eladynos was already approved by NICE for NHS use in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in 2024. The SMC decision supports equitable access to effective therapies across the UK, with over 1,000 women in Scotland expected to benefit.

Professor David Reid, Consultant Rheumatologist and Osteoporosis Specialist, said: “Today’s news provides a welcome treatment option grounded in robust evidence for both clinicians and patients.”

Tina Backhouse, UK General Manager at Theramex, said: “This approval not only ensures women in Scotland have access to a diversity of treatment options but also reinforces our ongoing efforts to collaborate with healthcare providers and policymakers.”
