For much of modern medicine, healthcare systems have been structured around treating disease once it becomes clinically apparent.
We screen for elevated blood glucose before diagnosing diabetes and we treat the consequences of cardiovascular disease once risk has translated into pathology. While preventive medicine has always existed, it has historically been difficult to intervene earlier in the disease trajectory in a meaningful way. That may now be changing.
At the centre of this shift is a class of medications that many still dismiss as little more than ‘diet drugs’: GLP-1s.
